Social Studies (Miss Hayes)
We are finishing up the Gilded Age newspapers and the Gilded Age unit. We worked on ads today. How about a house for $4,000? More importantly, how about a yearly wage of $438? Some of the kids found great items to include ads for in their papers. I do have one student who can tell you how much coffins cost in 1900 (should I be worried?) This week we will work on reviewing the more difficult part of the era and then bring in the Progressives that wanted to creat change. By the end of the week, we should have hit muckrakers - I love to read to them from The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, they may never eat sausage again. Hopefully, we will be ready for a quiz by the end of the week. Then we move on into WWI.
Language Arts (Ms. Davis)
We will begin reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Some of you may remember reading this book when you were a teenager. As with our class novels so far, we will do most of the reading in class.
We will continue to work on grammar review as issues arise in student writing.
Students who had trouble with Unit 4 word cell quizzes should see me for a retake (during Focus or after school).
Students should still be reading for homework every night.
Period B will finish up posters and begin reading Max the Mighty (sequel to Freak the Mighty) in class.
Please keep in touch and let me know if you have questions or concerns about Language Arts.
Math (Mr. Toothaker)-- Topics coming up this week:
A-Inequalities-Test next week
B-Solving simple equations
C-Start Ch.5-Rates/Ratio
D&E-Real Numbers-Pythagorean Theorem
Students are required to show complete work in math homework, quizzes and tests.
Science (Mr. Maker and Ms. Doughty)
We have completed our unit on Energy and had an assessment on Friday. We truly feel kids have a much better grasp on how they each influence your power bills and how they can help conserve at home and school. Students should know how they scored by Wednesday so be sure to ask them. We will begin to focus on the States of Matter and how they change and interact. On Tuesday they will be assigned a project that will require them to research and gather information to be used in producing a Key Note Presentation (Apple's version of Power Point). They will be given a fair amount of class time to work on this this week, but they will also need to be continuing this work at home. A due date has not been determined yet - Ms. Doughty and I wanted to see how much they were able to accomplish by Thursday's class. This is the first time
we have used Key Note in science and we are not sure how quickly kids will catch on. Regardless, they will be given ample time and the final product will not be due until at least the 4th or 5th of February.
Also, I will be out of the building next week. My wife is being recognized by Apple Computer (she has worked for them for over 20 years) and I am accompanying her to Hawaii to take part. She is responsible for securing the three largest sales deals in Apple history so it is clear I married well/smart!! Ms. Doughty will be running the lab and rest assured, the kids are in great hands. I will be back on Monday February 1st but will be checking my email each day. If there is anything that comes up you would like to speak with me about do not hesitate to drop me a line. Stay warm.
Mr. Maker
